Resign With Class:
When Should You Resign From A Job?
By Carl Mueller
When should you resign from a job?
Certainly, when you get a new job and are
currently employed by someone else, you need
to figure out when to deliver the news to
your boss that you have a new job and are
resigning.
I’ve found that some people want to run out
and resign right away as soon as they have
a job offer even before they have actually
received an offer in writing!
Before you resign from your current
employer, take some time to ensure that
everything is in place with your new employer.
Here are some tips regarding figuring
out the timing of your resignation.
1. Don’t think about resigning until
you have actually received a job offer
in writing. A job offer is not a job offer
until you have an offer in writing. I
would not think about resigning from my
current employer until I had not only
received the offer in my hand, but until
I’d also returned my signed copy to them
and had my new employer confirm they’d
received it. I always return the signed
copy of the job offer to my new employer
before thinking about resigning from my
current employer. Ensure that the job
offer contains everything you expected
and then return the signed copy to your
new employer before resigning from your
current job.
2. Pay attention to the terms of your
current employer. If you are required
to give a certain amount of notice - 2
or 3 weeks notice is fairly standard -
you want to ensure you provide them with
the necessary notice. Quitting on the
spot or only giving one week notice when
you are required to give 3 weeks is the
best way to burn your bridges with your
current employer. Even though you are
leaving them, you want to leave your employer
on good terms in case you ever have the
opportunity to return to them or in the
case you need something from them ie.
a reference.
