Born and raised Californian at heart; I’ve gotten pretty good at dodging bullets thanks to the high crime rate in the Inland Empire. Even though I’ve been living in Washington DC for the last year, I still have my extensive collection of flip flop sandals in every color. I used to have a beach cruiser bike but it was stolen. Isn’t that sad?

Life has dramatically changed for me in the last year. Moving from Southern California to DC, a marriage, and a new job in one of the busiest emergency rooms in the country, I have more than enough to talk about. I’ll spare the boring details and get to the point.

When I was 23 years old I decided that working as an EMT isn’t exactly going to pay the bills and keep my beer stocked in the frig for the rest of my life. You would think that saving lives would pay well, but it doesn’t. After being exposed to the world of emergency medicine, I decided that I would just spend a ridiculous amount of time in school to become a physician.

I think that one of the most frustrating things about going to school is paying for it. When I moved out here, I had the harsh realization that I had an out-of-state tuition status which means I would have to fork over $15,000 MORE a year at the University of Maryland. If that’s not a swift kick to the crotch, then I don’t know what is.

I had to make a sad decision to take a year off of school and work full time so that the state of Maryland could rape my paycheck with taxes. Well, I’m glad to report that I finally made it!

Being the good woman that I am, I moved to DC to support a significant career advancement for my husband. Now, I’m 25 years old trying to finish my bachelors degree in neurobiology and physiology all while maintaining a part-time EMT job and a full time wife job. Thank goodness I don’t have any kids! My husband is really supportive of my schooling and takes good care of us, but he said once I’m a doctor he’s going to sit on his ass and let me take care of him for a while. I think that’s pretty fair. So in nutshell, I’m just another older student realizing that I need to make something of myself.

Wow. Jenaya here really has her shiznit together, huh? She's busting her hump to become a doctor. Better yet -- she's making her husband support her until she does! Great work, Jenaya -- I need to find a husband like that. Er, I mean a wife. Yeah...that's what I meant.

How about you? Were you able to trick a guy or gal into supporting you while you go through school? How about just your parents? If so, you can -- if you apply to to be our next Intellistudent Of The Week.
