Ellany Saxton
Intellistudent of the Week, 12-20-06

I would describe myself as quirky. I can be loud, funny, a loyal friend, and definitely exuberant. I throw myself into activities, pursuing the “more is better” philosophy. I love to read (my favorite author is Willa Cather) and to learn new things, from AP Physics to my Grandma‘s peach cobbler recipe. A performer to the core, my greatest passions are dancing and acting. I dance my way through life, leaping from school to home, pirouetting from practice to volunteer activities, and I stretch my splits during homework or girly movie nights with my best friends. I also love to sing show tunes while unloading the dishwasher and quote Jack Black movies with my dad.

My mother is the kindest person I know. She teaches kindergarten, and I have her to thank for my love of reading. She is always bringing home books, songs, anything her students might like, and asking my opinion. She’s been there for me, from grade school fun runs to my first date, and always knows the right thing to say. Somehow she finds time to cook, clean, take me shopping for prom dresses, and go to every dance competition and performance I’ve ever been in.

My father is probably the smartest person I know. He can do everything, from helping me pick out a pair of high heels (he always has an opinion) to changing the oil in my car. He’s gone from high school football coach/math teacher to the superintendent of the Tigard-Tualatin school district, and he loves to sing along to the radio with me. He’s taught me the important things in life--how to surround myself with people who care about me, how to jump start a car, and that canned chili is the perfect food.

My older brother is a junior at the University of Oregon. We fight a lot, mostly because if we didn’t, we might have to admit that we actually love each other. He taught me how to ride a bike, how to wax a car, and how to punch someone and make it hurt. He’s a nerd/jock who drives a Corvette, and he knows how to push my buttons. He was my first best friend, and hopefully also my last.

My personal goals are many and varied. I want to surround myself with loved ones. My dream is to sit on a porch surrounded by my family, friends, and dogs and teach my grandchildren how to dance, how to dream, and how to punch someone and make it hurt. I want to travel the world, drink coffee in Venice, tea in London, eat a croissant in Paris, see giraffes in Africa, koalas in Australia, and the great wall of China. I want to go to nursing school, help people survive their illnesses. Most of all, I want to know that I’ve made a difference, that through my life, I’ve somehow made the world a better place, made it more beautiful, more fun, brighter. I am always striving to put a smile on someone’s face, and I want to go out of this world leaving my audience saying, “Wow, that was really something.”

Guess what Ellany? Scuzzy has eaten a croissant in Paris. It's not nearly as exciting or romantic as you would think. Of course that could be because it was Paris, Kentucky. Anyway, if you're as goal oriented as Ellany, you may have what it takes to be Intellistudent of the Week. Hell, if you have a pulse you may have what it takes to be Intellistudent of the Week. Either way, give it a try-- Apply to be our next Intellistudent Of The Week.
