Friends
and Family
You're off at college with your fancy book learning, and you come back home whip-smart and intimidate all your factory-working uncles who remember you as a toddler but now are afraid to talk around you because their grammar isn't as good as yours, college boy.

But your family's just kidding around, because
you haven't forgotten your roots. You call home
often, send pictures and write emails (and we
don't mean the ones where you're groveling for
money, either). You know the importance of keeping
in touch with your friends and family, don't
you? Of course you do. You know what Tony Soprano
would do to someone who turned his back on his
family? He'd kill them, that's what.

Cheap Cell Phones

Do you know ONE person who uses all the stupid features that manufacturers cram into phones? Perhaps you're old school and prefer that a phone simply lets you make calls and receive them. Then again, maybe you're the ONE person who checks stocks while talking to your friends while texting other friends while listening to that Black-Eyed Peas song that plays 42 times a day on the radio. It's your call.

Much like, say, EVERYTHING else, cell phones are cheaper online -- from the basics to Blackberries, and especially if you want a pay-as-you-go plan.
Cheap Phone Cards

Phone cards have long been a way for illegal
immigrants to call their home countries without
phone-company involvement and for hitmen to
call and leave brief-but-ominous messages
such as "Our friend has gone for a very long
swim." But doesn't the fact that lawbreakers
of all stripes use calling cards just make
them sexier? You bet it does.
Internet Phone Service

The Intellistudent mantra is that we save
students money and time, so pay special attention
here: Nowhere on our site saves you more money
than this section. Internet phone service,
or voice-over-IP (VoIP), is slowly killing
the trillion-dollar phone companies. And no
one should be happier about their gruesome
and painful suffocation than you, the consumer.

Phone service over the Internet is pretty much free. Two cents a minute or something like that, depending on whether you're calling someone in the U.S. (that's usually free) or in China (that's a couple cents a minute). If you have an Internet connection (and we know you do!), you must look into it. Otherwise, you're donating your hard-earned money to some of the richest monopolies this side of Saudi Arabia.

Printing Photos

If you're not taking thousands (or at least hundreds) of photos of your life and times and friends and whatnot while you're at college, then you must start today. 25 years from now, you're going to look like your parents, and no one will believe you were ever as sexy and smart and fun and carefree as you are today (Ask your parents. They'll confirm).

Anyone can shoot digital photos, but what usually happens is they end up a folder called "01573FNS" with each photo named something like "03434JPG". Not the best situation for later viewing. However, you can submit them online for printing and pick up real prints (remember those?) at places like Walgreen's and Wal-Mart. Some places will actually mail them to you.
"Friends & Family" Articles

You're a wonderful, accomplished young man. Or woman. Whatever. Point is, you don't need us telling you how to be a good kid.

We can, however, give you some advice on the tools of the trade -- phones and phone cards for keeping in touch, and photos and cameras for sending back evidence that you're taking good care of yourself.
